What You Need for a Notary Appointment

Valid-Government Issued Photo ID

To comply with California notary law, all signers must present a valid photo ID. Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • California driver’s license or state ID
  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • Military ID
  • Foreign passport (with a valid U.S. visa or entry stamp)
  • Inmate ID issued by the California Department of Corrections

IDs must be current or have been issued within the last five years.

Completed (but Unsigned) Document(s)

Please complete the document in advance, but do not sign it before your appointment unless you have been instructed otherwise. Some notarizations, such as jurats, require the notary to witness your signature in person.

All signers must be present

Each signer whose signature must be notarized is required to appear in person and present valid identification. This requirement applies to real estate signings, powers of attorney, affidavits, consent forms, and other documents that require notarization.

Notarial Wording or Certificate

Some documents already include the required notarial wording, such as an acknowledgment or jurat. If your document does not include California notarial wording, I can provide a California acknowledgment or jurat certificate based on your request. However, I cannot advise which certificate your document needs. That must be determined by you, the document receiving agency, or a legal professional.

An acknowledgment is used when the signer personally appears before the notary, proves their identity, and acknowledges that they signed the document. The document may already be signed before the appointment, but the signer must still appear in person.

A jurat is used when the signer personally appears before the notary, signs the document in the notary’s presence, and takes an oath or affirmation regarding the document.

A notary verifies the identity of the signer and completes the notarial certificate. A notary does not verify the truthfulness, accuracy, or legal validity of the document.

Accepted Payment Methods

Payment is collected at the time of service. I accept the following:

  • Cash

  • Check

  • Venmo
